July Meeting 2012 – Grafting and Pruning with Allan Gilbert

Standard

Members were treated to horticultural tips with book sales and signings from expert and former ABC radio presenter Allan Gilbert – author of 13 books including the No DIg Garden, and Espalier. He was clearing the decks for his move interstate – we wish him all the best. Even Peter Cundall got in on the act with a quick interview of Allen in the morning archived online here.

If you missed out on a book they can be ordered through Devonport Bookshop or WIndow on the World ( a great little coffee/bookstore in Ulverstone. The ABC has an old sheet on his grafting techniques

Allan reccomends the folding Bahco prunings saws which cut on both the forward and backward stroke, and Felco secatuers.

Thank you to everyone who brought food to share! Colleen’s Crackers were very tasty and she has supplied the recipe 🙂 Her husbands herbs scones and zucchini butter are already in the recipe file

  • 1 cup white flour
  • 1/3 cup wholemeal or Rye flour
  • 2 tbsp each of black and white sesame seeds
  • 1 tbsp chopped Oregano or 1 tspn dried
  • 1 tspn salt
  • 1/4 cup Olive oil
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tspn Sesame oil
  •  salt for sprinkling

Line a tray with baking paper heat oven to 165 degrees c

Mix flours, seeds, Oregano and 1 teaspoon salt in a bowl

mix olive oil and water together and add to the bowl
stir until it forms a firm, soft dough

Break into 4 pieces and roll out on a floured bench until thin
cut into strips 2cm wide

After transferring strips to baking tray, brush each with sesame oil and
sprinkle with more good salt (eg Murray River, Celtic sea salt or Himalayan salt). This is what gives them the nice nutty & salty taste!

Bake until golden (takes between 15 and 30 mins)

Store in an airtight tin

Eat and enjoy!!!!!
