Curing peanut allergy

A melbourne outfit led by Mimi Tang recently cured some kiddies of their peanut allergy combining a probiotic and a kind of homeopathic therapy – escalating doses of peanut allergen ( in homeopathy the sicker you are the LOWER the dose ) It is a double blind study, the kids are  photogenic so everyone is happy, especially Prof Tang (who is crowing about being the first to do this though I she isn’t. US and UK doctors have done it before without the probiotics – http://homeopathyplus.com.au/peanut.html )

Abstract of the research ( done with Murdoch money ) : http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25592987?log$=activity and an earlier review of the topic by Mimi Tang here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3448073/

So being nut allergic and having an allergic kid I immediately went hunting and fortunately the probiotic is common – Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG. It’s in vaalia yoghurt. Plan – do the math and then go buy a straight probiotic dose of L actobacillus GG from Ethical Nutrients ( who can label it as helpful for eczema) – “100 grams of Vaalia Yoghurt contains a minimum of 100,000,000 colony forming units of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG or LGG®. ” “Vaalia Innergy for immunity contains 10 times the amount of Lactobacillus GG compared to Vaalia probiotic yoghurt.” http://www.vaalia.com.au/products/product-faqs/

Yoghurt is interesting – it will often make allergies WORSE because it’s a high histamine food ( all fermentations produce histamine ). Certainly I personally found eating kefir was a problem. I was most dismayed to find my allergies worsening because I loooved the stuff although it wasn’t until I read the Low Histamine chef’s articles and found out a large fresh juice ( its the oranges) and leftover prawn pizza = instant sneezing that the penny dropped. Certain strains of lactobacillus make histamine – others don’t. A common one L. casei is a culprit. The Bulletproof Executive has a fully referenced write up of the topic www.bulletproofexec.com/why-yogurt-and-probiotics-make-you-fat-and-foggy/

Histamine Intolerance and Which Bacteria to Avoid

Disturbance in gut biome also plays a significant role in creating the recent rise in histamine intolerance. Histamine intolerance is the result of an imbalance between the breakdown of histamine and its buildup in the gut. This is generally caused by a deficiency in the DAO enzymes (found in intestinal mucosa) that helps metabolize and breakdown dietary sources of histamine.

A histamine overload leads to increased inflammation and many other symptoms including: skin irritation, hives, throat tightening, increased heart rate, nasal congestion, migraines, fatigue, heartburn, reflux, and weight gain.4 Unlike other food allergies and sensitivities, the response from histamine intolerance is cumulative and not always immediate, so it is harder to pin point right away.

Another excellent review is ” Helpful Bacteria – Should you take probiotics” by David Schardt, Centre for Science in the Public Interest ( US based http://www.cspinet.org/new/pdf/nah_probiotics.pdf ).

Should You take Probiotics?

Caveat: – an intact mucosal barrier of the skin both outside and inside is likely needed as it is part of the initiating problem. I will have to ask if kids with eczema were screened out of the peanut trial.

“Animal experiments have confirmed that repeated topical contact with allergens through skin whose barrier function is disrupted could promote allergic sensitization and airway hypersensitivity and prevent oral tolerance induction (6–13)” In fact the peanut patch is another way of inducing immune tolerance ( i guess it’s bit like those expensive injections )

Reccomendations from scientific experts these days are changed more often than I repaint the house. Time magazine reports experts are now backpedalling on avoiding nuts to prevent later allergies “Based on recent findings, the AAP in 2008 changed its advice and now does not say parents should avoid feeding their babies peanuts.” http://time.com/3719341/peanut-allergy-cure-treatment/

and whyeee is modern medicine putting the boot into homeopathy when the underlying tenet ‘like cures like’ in teensy doses obviously works wonders applied to the immune system? There has been a recent escalation of  attempts to discredit this therapy and ban it in the UK, USA and Australia. I am sure they will just have to backpedal on that too as the scientific (versus the much older observational and intuitive) understanding of the immune system increases. Lightning Bolts within Cells

A. “Cellular Circuit: A cell can be thought of as a circuit made up of capacitors and resistors. Its membrane and those of its organelles, such as the nucleus, act like capacitors. The briny liquid encased within the membranes, the cytosol and nucleoplasm, is conductive and so can be modeled as resistors.” http://www.biotele.com/bioelectric.htm Illustration: Bryan Christie Design

Lurking deep inside an ordinary cell are electric fields strong enough to cause a bolt of lightning. “The existence of strong electric fields across cellular membranes is accepted as a basic fact of cell biology. Maintaining gradients of charged molecules and ions allows for many cellular functions, from control over cell volume to the electrical discharges of nerve and muscle cells. The fact that cells have internal electric fields, however, is surprising. Kopelman presented his results at the annual meeting of the American Society for Cell Biology. “There has been no skepticism as to the measurements,” says Kopelman. “But we don’t have an interpretation.” http://www.technologyreview.com/news/409171/lightning-bolts-within-cells/

The electric universe theory isn’t surprised that it doesn’t stop on the outside of a cell at all since the wiring runs continously through the beautiful living matrix model.

B. the Living Matrix model of the body and cell – James Oschmann

I felt quite underawed by this year’s Nobel Prize for medicine – ‘place cells‘. Part of the disapointment stems from this looking retro and pedestrian after recent findings in neuroplastic research. Important no doubt but not electrifying news, not a patch on reading Energy Medicine, The Scientific Basis James L. Oschman, 2000

Modern neurophysiology focuses primarily on the activity of less than half of the cells in the brain (Becker 1990a, 1991). The ‘neuron doctrine’ holds that all functions of the nervous system are the result of activities of the neurons. Integration of brain function is therefore regarded as arising from the massive interconnectivity of the neurons. This view is incomplete because it ignores an evolutionarily more ancient informational system residing in the perineural connective tissue cells that constitute more than half of the cells in the brain. Perineural cells encase every nerve fiber, down to their finest terminations throughout the body. The perineural system is a direct current communication system  reaching to every innervated tissue. The perineural system  establishes a ‘current of injury’ that controls injury repair. Historically, the injury potential was discovered before the discovery of resting and action potentials of nerves (Davson 1970). The current of injury is generated at the site of a wound, and continues until repair is complete. James L. Oschman

A number of biologists have concluded that the frequency overlap of Schumann resonances and biological fields is not accidental, but is the culmination of a close interplay between geomagnetic and biomagnetic fields over evolutionary time James L. Oschman

As mentioned in an earlier post I came to hear of Wallace Thornhill’s Electric Universe theory via the bio-electric side of things. I footled off to see David ‘eating for beauty’ Wolfe on a rawfood/permaculture retreat in Byron Bay. Like good hippies we were supposed to walk around Leilani’s garden barefoot, ‘earthing’. I had visions of hookworm and ant bites so was a little slow to warm to the idea ( despite a grounding hug from David! ) but in the end I came around to it. Longtime members may have seen little ads for Earthing products on the astro website – we are connected to the cosmic grid! The catalyst was hearing James Oschmann lecture on the body being a liquid crystal electric circuit.

Medical Marijuana in Australia

Missed it by that much!  After being rebuffed from starting a clinical trial  of medicinal marijuana in Tasmania with UTAS, Tasman Health Cannabinoids  has given the growlight by Norfolk island. They hope to fill a 1,000 kilo preorder from Canada. The chief executive officer Troy Langman  said “We dearly look forward to the day when we can supply Australian patients, but in the meantime we have substantial export opportunities, such as to Europe and Canada, where medicinal cannabis is legal,”  Understandably Troy who had agreed to come up and talk to Astro about the technical issues, is now a bit too busy oversease.    7:30 report video http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-08-01/medicinal-cannabis/5642690

Troy is still looking for an oncologist to head up an australian trial – all those in Tasmania have said no! Unbelievable. This ABC interview which featured Troy and Ulverstone cancer patient Natalie Daley erupted the airwaves a week after I contacted him – http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-06-27/medicinal-cannabis/5556578

Thanks Michael Ferguson! Thanks Jeremy  Rockliff! He may have to do a backflip after earlier saying ‘not moving ‘ ‘that is our final answer’ on the position of medical cannabis and and putting words into the mouth of his father’s poppy industry. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-07-03/tas-rejection-of-medicinal-cannabis-trial-a-missed-opportunity/5569802

For every health guru there is an equal and opposite guru

Day 5 Thyroid summit

Its was a BIG day with Dr Greg Emmerson who is 6’7″ and Dr Steven Hotze from Houston, where everything is just BIGGER.

I found this pair were so inspirational – men of action, no whinging, go out and change it if you don’t agree types. Dr Emmerson has a food is your medicine approach, and since he thinks modern food has had the medicines increasingly bred out of it, he grows his own on a permaculture farm on the gold coast.  He’s a fan of dandelion tea and weeds in general. I am a dreadful gardener so I have had to learn to eat the weeds and love them . But the ideas he kept mentioning of  ‘medicine’  ‘mycotoxin’ I think is better thought of in terms of dose and situation – Bechamp’s terroir theory . After all one person’s weed is another’s cottage herb. Toxins and medicines are two sides of same coin. There’s a theory that humans don’t like bitter tastes to avoid poisoning in pregnancy and childhood. Being small I have had a few accidents with green leafies that really actually don’t want to be eaten ( buckwheat sprouts), and the purgative properties of violet leaves. Bug resistant plants like weeds are basically full of  natural pesticides – which we can label medicine or toxin  if we can’t metabolise them, and that is an individual genomic thing.

Dr Ray Peat phd, who incidentally is the man who inspired Dr Lee MD, who inspired Dr Hotze MD, on the wider therapeutic uses of bioidentical progesterone, thinks only the below ground parts of plants, or ripe fruit, is fit plant matter for human consumption. He doesn’t like green leafies.

So in 1978 I attended a meeting, actually I was giving a talk on hypoglycemia and Linus Pauling was there giving a talk on Vitamin C, when Dr. Ray Peat, a Ph.D. from Oregon was there giving a talk to doctors challenging them, saying, “why aren’t you all using progesterone, the second female hormone? It’s readily available, they can make it from yams, they can make it from soy, they can make it from 5000 different plants, it’s identical to what the humans make, it’s been out for 30 years in face creams, cosmetics, it’s wonderful for the skin, it’s available, the FDA can’t find anything wrong with it, why are you using only estrogen for post-menopausal ladies? http://www.keepsmilin.com/transcriptdrlee.htm

He has an interesting idea on using raw carrot as a between meal cleanse and for hormone balancing! that Dr Emmerson might like. Dr Peat says root crops are naturally rich in antifungals since they are surrounded by moisture all the time in soil,   “The carrot salad improves the ratio of progesterone to estrogen and cortisol” http://raypeat.com/articles/articles/epilepsy-progesterone.shtml

Confession: I found Ray Peat’s work while looking for a diet that allows white sugar daily. Recently both the bitter and the sweet receptors have been linked to our immune system in the upper airways. University of Pennsylvania researchers say “Bitter taste receptors (T2Rs) in the human airway detect harmful compounds, including secreted bacterial products.” If  something smells bitter we secrete antimicrobial peptides into the airways. When the sweet taste receptors of the nose are activated this is shutdown. Score one for aromatherapy and quitting sugar, but alas for diabetics, who have more sugar in their nasal mucus.http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3934184/

I agree with Dr Emmerson that the pace of modern inventions is moving uncomfortably fast for gross mammalian adaptation, so we should take a step back. But I can’t imagine living like our ancestors – full on paleo no way – just have a look at the experience of this month’s speaker Tracy Hohnke who was blasted back to 1800’s with her family for 4 months on the living history show ‘the Colony’. At least chocolate had been invented! Perhaps we have a better chance of keeping up than we realise since most of our cells are ‘not self’ but ‘other’ in a personal unique microbiome. I wonder how much of our health is thanks to exotic DNA?  Who knows what buttons we can push epigenetically?

Detox: Create a Virtual rainforest:

Absolutely agree with Dr Emmerson that yoga is fantastic, and that we should be out in the rainforest, but preferably at a Byron hinterland spa with all mod cons. (My mum and aunt were fans of the Swami Sarasvati show. Swami had lots of painful impossible poses for us every morning. I never imagined it was spiritual or relaxing until I stumbled across Haven Yoga special stretch and breath version while putting up Astrotas posters 🙂 It crossed my mind Dr E should have an aversion for nature after catching a horrid parasite that ruined his health in Papua New Guinea. Perhaps it was a case of terroir since his family history is one of  thyroid issues. I’m not big on camping. Dr Horowitz will scare us all out of the forest on Day 6 of the thyroid summit with his talk on Lyme disease.

How generous is youtube with hours of free music videos for meditation and yoga – lets put one on the big television and nebulise a little eucalyptus oil to complete the illusion

Dr Emmerson talked on the importance of minimising and removing environmental toxins like mould to which he is allergic. Depending on genetic MTHFR status of  an individual detoxifying can need a little extra help.  Zeolite he reccomends does sound like an excellent choice as it binds ammonia, which is problematic for us MTHFR A1298C mutants. also see CBS pathway from day 1 but the potential benefit is probably more than cancelled out since aluminium in zeolite is itself a detox problem! Zeolite is an aluminium compound shown in the animal feeding test mentioned on Dr Ray Sahelian’s excellent website to cause accumulation of the metal in bone and cartilage.

Where to Get Dessicated Natural Thyroid

hotze heart infection

Dr Hotze – this guy is utterly fearless! He doesn’t fart about with saliva or blood tests for any hormones – he just treats the patient on a good old clinical diagnosis. He is sueing the govt over Obamacare! http://www.breitbart.com/Breitbart-Texas/2014/04/08/Obamacare-Lawsuit-from-Houston-Moving-Forward

He started looking at natural therapies when his father almost died on the table undergoing a balloon angioplasty. Hotze senior, an engineer, reasoned that this was in fact a violation of basic engineering principals to stretch a calcified stiffened tube and not expect it to burst, and asked his son to go look into vitamins after reading a newsletter on heart disease from Dr Julian Whitaker.

I’m a fan of Linus Pauling’s metabolic draino recipe which will simultaneously stomp out inflammation, rebuild collagen and pull off the Lipoprotein(a) mentioned as being rather hard to treat with high dose niacin; equal parts sodium ascorbate and lysine powder eg. 6 grams of each divided into three doses. lpi.oregonstate.edu/fw12/lipoprotein.html (the only caveat being I would suggest testing copper levels. I am a small labrat. On megadose vit c after months I did find it is possible to drop your copper levels if your diet/gut is suboptimal, both also bad for collagen. The FBC will show a neutropenia. Other than that the earliest side effects were all good – losing stretch marks, varicose veins and the old lady swollen ankles 😉

Gluten and Thyroid – Dr Tom O’Bryan

Gluten and Thyroid – Dr Tom O’Bryan

quiche1YAY! Bernice’s GF Feta, Pea and Dill Quiche with Lentil and Sweet Potato Pastry recipe won the Canadian Lentil Challenge! Thanks to anyone who voted for it.

Second Opinion Series – the thyroid sessions
Yo! Wassup yall! – my teenage son just thought this was so funny when we were listening to an Underground Wellness podcast – till I did point out Sean is actually entitled to talk like a bro. Dr Tom OBryan will be talking about the gluten and thyroid connection on tuesday/wed USA which is wed/thursday australian time. Watch all of the sessions while it’s free ( just click the banner below; you still have 24 hours or so to catch up on the opening presentations too) or grab the complete sessions as a paid download – I’ve previewed this and watched the first couple completely and they are great. Sean Croxton always does a super job of asking the right questions, keeping it fun, relevant and intelligible for the average person. Plus he’s so genuinely supportive of his viewers, be they paying customers or just along for the ride.

The original Gluten Summit with Dr Tom is still available to download for USD $67 and it too was amazing – I learnt so much. ( Any commissions from sales go to Astrotas of course! )
